About

Rebekah Wilson Smith is a painter and mixed media sculptor whose work examines working-class white nostalgia and gendered domestic culture through the lens of horror film tropes and visual puns. Her irreverent, dark-humored art hijacks the symbols of down-home, religious and capitalist values by transforming decorative artifacts into possessed objects and characters. The resulting misfit objects populate a looking-glass world where the shadow-side of American ideals is reflected and amplified. She reveals sinister subtexts and a carnival of irony beneath wholesome materials.

Inspired by her upbringing in a fundamentalist Christian home in California’s Central Valley, Smith mines the milieus of her past for symbols of hypocrisy, saccharine facades, and creepy nostalgia. A child of the 1980’s, Smith is fascinated by memories of the Satanic Panic-- a Moral Majority-led, media-fueled backlash against all things pop-culture and, by extension, non-Christian. In this world view, an occult conspiracy could be found in even the most mundane of objects, and the possession of people or things by demonic forces was an ever present threat. Through her work, Smith explores how that past continues to manifest in the present.
